Color sorting activity

Children are naturally attracted to discovering and exploring with colours. This activity is a fun way for kids to practice colour recognition and matching which helps tehm develop their visual-spatial intelligence. Through this game they also learn to find relationships between objects, which helps them develop their logical skills, problem solving abilities and critical thinking.

What is visual-spatial intelligence?
Visual-spatial intelligence is one of the 8 intelligences in Howard Gardner’s groundbreaking theory of multiple intelligence. It highlights a person’s ability and capacity to understand, remember, and recall the spatial relations among objects, to think in terms of images, and to orient oneself spatially. People with visual-spatial intelligence are very aware of their surroundings and are good at remembering images, they have a keen sense of direction and often enjoy maps. They also have a sharp sense of space, distance and measurement. Besides, they learn well through visual aids such as graphs, diagrams, pictures and colorful displays and usually enjoy visual arts such as drawing, painting and photography.

The objectives of this activity are to:
– Develop logical and visual-spatial intelligence
– Learn inside-outside concept
– Recognize colours
– Develop hand-eye coordination
– Get familiar with English vocabulary

Material for the activity:
– Paper cardboard
– Hoops (can also be drawn on a sheet and painted)

Development of the activity:
We made flashcards with colourful paper cardboard: we chose red, yellow, blue and green. Then, we placed four hoops on the floor, one of each colour and we assigned the flashcards to each child while naming the colours. The purpose of the activity is to place the flashcards in the right hoop, the one with the same colour as the flashcard.

We can add different levels of complexity to this activity. For example, we can give two items/cards to a child and ask that the matching one goes inside the circle and the different one, is left outside of the circle.
